Jack (John) Foord died on Thursday, May 21, 2009. He had been ill since last December.

He and his wife, Kay (Kathryn), folded and mailed our Questing Heirs newsletters for years. When they moved into an assisted living facility, they had to give up the job.

The viewing will be at 10:00am on Saturday, May 30. Services start at 11:00 with burial and then back to church for refreshments. It is being held at the Church of Latter-day Saints, 161125 Studebaker Road, Cerritos.

Jack and Kay had been married for 67 years. They did not have any children, however, a strong church family supports them.

Liz Myers is planning on being at the service to honor them and represent Questing Heirs. If anyone wants to join her, contact her by phone at (562) 598-3027 or by email at stookesberry@gmail.com.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we have had to cancel our meeting scheduled for this Sunday, May 17. The church will be using the Parish Hall for a memorial service. We just found out Monday afternoon, so we did not have enough time to make other arrangements.

Our speaker, Alice Volkert, will be rescheduled for a later meeting. The Intermediate and Beginning classes will be presented at our June 21st meeting.

We are sorry for the inconvenience.

A new way our members can painlessly contribute to Questing Heirs is by signing up for eScrip. We are now enrolled in this program that, similar to the Ralphs card plan, refunds to our organization a small amount of club members' purchases at various stores.

The number of stores and restaurants in our area that participate is surprising. Below are just a few:

To register, go to www.escrip.com and click on "sign up." You will need to indicate that the Organization is Questing Heirs Genealogical Society. Our Group ID is 500017998. Either will do; you probably don't need both to sign up.

Once you are at "Sign Up," just follow the directions. It only takes a few minutes.

Since this is a secure system, you don't have to worry about credit card security. And you don't have to remember what places honor eScrip—just use your card and we will get our portion.

You can help Questing Heirs with each purchase from AbeBooks by using the link to the AbeBooks site on our Shop page.

Our next event in the Resources for the Family Historian series will be this Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 9:00 AM at the Iacoboni Library. The library is located at 4900 Clark Ave., Lakewood, near Lakewood Mall. See you there!

20 April 2008

As announced at our meeting today, Questing Heirs branded merchandise is now available for purchase online at Café Press. Among the items available are T-shirts, golf shirts, caps, tote bags, journals, and mugs. The merchandise is good quality and our artwork looks great! Café Press takes care of the hard part—they produce the merchandise on demand and handle the payment and shipping. All we have to do is upload the artwork and set up the store. Best of all, a portion of the purchase price goes to Questing Heirs. All in all, it's a great way to show your pride, get our name out there, and contribute to the society. You can reach the store via a link from our new Shop page.

21 July 2006

In 1974, Questing Heirs published "Some Early Southern California Burials." It proved so popular that a second printing was published in 1978, but for several years it has been out of print. In keeping with our mission to collect, preserve and publish data relating to genealogy, the board decided to convert the book in its entirety to PDF format, and make it available as a free download at www.qhgs.info/downloads.html.

The book covers burials in the Wilmington, Sunnyside and Long Beach Municipal Cemeteries to 1920, in alphabetical order. A few later burials are listed in the same family plot.

An Abstract of Records from the Funeral Register of the B. W. Coon Co. Funeral Home, Long Beach, California (covering 1922-1926) is also available as a free download.
